Sydney’s buses

Just when I thought I was familiar with the bus services around Coogee, the powers that be are planning to make extensive changes to the bus services in that area.   The general idea is to reduce the number of routes and to provide more frequent services on the main routes.     In principle this is a good idea, but of course people get used to having a bus stop in their own street.

I know that it’s somewhat presumptuous of me as an outsider to pass judgement on what may work in Sydney, and my comments are based on only some brief observations, but it does seem to me that an issue that could be addressed is the ability to transfer between different bus routes or modes of transport.   For example, the transfers to some of the other bus routes or the light rail in Belmore Rd Randwick both involve walking some distance (although transfers from the light rail to buses only require a road crossing).

Likewise, at Green Square station, transfers to the busy route 370 bus towards UNSW and Coogee involve quite a walk along Botany Road, as well as a need to cross the road with no nearby traffic lights.

At the Bondi Junction interchange, things are a little better, but even there the frequent route 333 bus from Bondi Beach stops outside the interchange, in the street.

I know that the placement of bus stops in congested narrow streets can be a challenge, but given that the new arrangements would seem to involve more changes between vehicles, it does seem that some attention ought to be given to facilitating these.
