Sybil used to sit on the seat in the street outside her front gate and chat with passers-by (including us). Typically, she’d complain about the Council – as neighbours tend to do! How do I know her name was Sybil? Short answer – I didn’t, until I read the little sign that’s been fixed to the front fence!
It informed us that Sybil had recently died. Very thoughtful indeed of the family, and reminiscent of the custom still observed in parts of Europe in posting notices of deaths on a public noticeboard.
