The ABC carried a report by Red Cross to the effect that donations of goods to South Pacific countries to assist in disaster relief are often unhelpful. Aid agencies have issued a firm plea to well-meaning Australians who donate goods to people in disaster zones to avoid sending unrequested items. Money is much preferred.
Perhaps not surprisingly, this topic had come up in conversation with C while she was here on leave. C told us that it’s not only private individuals that fall into this trap, but some large corporates do also (think cruise lines). In this case, Red Cross has to be very tactful about what it does with the less-than-welcome items to avoid giving offence!
