I see that there’s a bit of controversy over the flags that fly at Cooma. These flags are part of a memorial that denotes the numerous countries from which people who worked on the Snowy scheme came. There’s pressure to replace the 1950s era South African flag with today’s South African flag.
But as the local Mayor points out, this is a memorial that records historical facts. Surely it would be inappropriate for every subsequent political development to be reflected.
When we went through Cooma, we noticed (as also pointed out by the Mayor) that the former Yugoslav flag is there. To reflect the current political situation in that region it would need to be replaced by …well, let’s just say…. “a number” of different flags.
